What reviewers have already said:

“Workers of all descriptions in all kinds of workplaces will readily identify with this series. This could become a classic sitcom, though doubtless it will raise a few middle class PC eyebrows on the way, particularly among those who have no comprehension of how working folk on the shop floor and industry manage their diversity with spirited humour and pragmatic solidarity.”

Dave Douglass – NUM

“Very funny, would make a wonderful television series.”

Steve Pope – of X Press Books and New Nation. Former Editor of The Voice.

“If the bosses ever find out what went on we’ll all get the sack. You rotten sod”
Hull night shift worker who worked with the writer and who is now a Shift Manager

The Night Shift is the voice of the UK factory floor in an age of globalisation when production is shifting to the low wage economies of the far east and the workshop of the world has become the warehouse of the just-in-time economy. What happens to shopfloor banter and working class wit in such a society is recorded here as ‘I’m All Right Jack’ meets ‘Waiting for Godot.’

Alex Gordon – Secretary of South Wales and West of England Council of the RMT

“I like the scripts, reminds me a bit of [Samuel] Beckett and Charlie Chaplin with a sprinkling of seventies sitcom such as On the buses or Love thy neighbour.” Guardian journalist Simon Hattenstone.

“Extremely funny with factory floor characters so real they seem surreal. But like all good humour rooted in experience it retains a Kes-like authenticity so difficult to capture. This should be a prime-time TV series.”

Gary Horne – Former BBC Panorama Producer

“One of the best writers of Northern gritty comedy dialogue.”

Oscar winning producer Ruth Kenley-Letts.

“Pacy, racy and lively, very funny. Fools and Horses mixed with the Rag Trade.” Journalist and writer Christian Wolmar.

“Real gritty stuff which made me rock with hysterical laughter”
‘Rising Damp’ technician Peter Boden.

“darkly subversive. Irvine Welsh meets Mike Leigh in the real Full Monty. Guaranteed to piss of every politically correct poseur from left, right and centre who has never worked a nightshift, realised the madness of the jobs we do and had their humour faculty lobotomised.” Mick Gosling –Ex-TGWU branch sec at Fords Dagenham.

“I loved every line. It was utterly hilarious and left me wanting more. I would love to see this on Television and think it would work very well.”

Richard McCann – author of best selling book ‘Just a Boy’

“Very, very funny. Reminded me of a number of night shifts I’ve worked”

Ray Jones – AMICUS official

“Hugely enjoyable. Vivid descriptions ensure a colourful read”

Daily Mirror Journalist Kevin Maguire in the Tribune Magazine

“It is an excellent book”

Jill from Kent

“You will be hearing from my solicitor with a personal injury claim for aching side” Andy, 20 years on nights after his daughter gave him a copy to read.

“Enjoyed it”

Al, Partisan Press in the USA

“Funniest book I’ve read in ages”

Tommy, factory floor worker from Peterlee, Co Durham.

“What a great laugh”

Dick, post-room worker at GLA

“I haven’t laughed so much from reading a book in years.”

Georgina from London.

“Our shift has had a great time reading this at break-times.”

Gary, Sunderland.

“Cheer yourself up; get a read of ‘the night shift’

London Building Worker Kenny

“I laughed a lot when I read the book”

Ross, Securicor employee

“It is a really good book, and working class humour at its very best.”

Doreen, retired PCS member

Radical and Revolting

The English Working Class

Our task must to be rescue the words of the Diggers and Levellers from obscurity and to locate them quite firmly in the context of working-class history and struggle; to seek inspiration from their words and actions; to ensure that all of these disparate voices are united under the common theme of working class resistance to poverty and oppression.

“I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he, and therefore truly, sir, I think it is clear to every man that is to live under a government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that government.”
Leveller Colonel Thomas Rainborough

“The rich and the great will never act to alleviate the distress and remove the poverty felt by the working people of England. What then is to be done? Why, the labouring classes must do it themselves, or it will for ever be left undone.”
George Loveless, Tolpuddle Martyr

“We renounce, repudiate, and condemn all hereditary inequalities and distinctions of caste; we declare that the earth with all its natural productions is the common property of all.‘’
Julian Harney

THE RISE OF THE BNP AND HOW TO COUNTER IT

Not since the 1970s has there been such a large growth in support for fascism in Britain. With nearly 20 local councillors, increased membership and positive media publicity the BNP are set to win seats at the 2004 European Elections.

Amongst some people there is a real fear that they can do little to stop the BNP growing. In this short pamphlet, intended as a discussion document and not ‘a tablet of stone’ the author tries to set out a strategy for countering the BNP and its anti-working class politics.

THE PERSISTENCE OF RELIGIOUS IDEAS IN THE 21st CENTURY: a contribution to a debate’

Why do religious ideas continue to exist in a world that is increasingly based on the application of science and technology?

Why do ideas which were derived from tribal society move people to carry out acts which are, at the most mundane level, incomprehensible to those who are non-believers?

Why, as we move into the third millennium of human existence, are so many aspects of our daily lives influenced by the actions of men who lived two thousand years ago [Jesus Christ], fifteen hundred years ago [Prophet Muhammad] or five hundred years ago [Guru Nanak/Guru Gobind Singh]?

It is precisely because so many conflicts and antagonisms in the modern world have their roots in ancient texts that the persistence of religious ideas is a subject that can’t be ignored.

In this book/let, the authors ask themselves some central questions in relation to religious faith: Is there a God? What is religion? Who makes religion? What is the relationship between religion and the state? Can religion ever be progressive? How can we characterise the religious ideal in modern Britain?

THE RICH AT PLAY - the history of foxhunting and land ownership in Britain' including 'the politics and people behind The Countryside Alliance'

This pamphlet examines the roots of foxhunting. This includes how it originated and why its continued existence is so important to the major landowners and their supporters in Britain, representing as it does 'their right' to use land they stole from past generations in whatever way they see fit. This pamphlet provides the most extensive examination undertaken, so far, into the people and the politics of 'The Countryside Alliance' who have promised a 'Summer of Discontent', including a massive march in central London.

'Against All Odds' - an account of the JJ Fast Food Workers Strike in Tottenham 1995-96'. Written by John McArthur.

At one point the JJ Fast Food Workers had almost brought the company to its knees and appeared on the verge of a historic victory. This was in spite of the company enjoying the support of the Police and the Immigration Laws. So why didn't they win? This booklet looks at the problems workers have with working within the current TUC, and more importantly for the JJ strikers, TGWU, structures. £1.50 post free or 10 copies for your union branch at £10 post-free.

'Fighting to Win'

With strike action at an all-time low and trade union membership continuing to decline what can be done to smash the employers attacks on wages and conditions?

Strikes at P&O Ferries in 1988-89, Bacton Fashions in 1990 and Dahl Jenson in 1999 are analysed to ensure that the lessons learned from the past can lay the ground for victories in the future.

Two articles from the Building Worker Group on 'Organising Your Site/Workplace' and 'Preventing Deaths on Site' are an invaluable addition to the pamphlet that should be read, discussed and used by all trade union militants. The pamphlet costs £1 or 10 copies for your union branch at £5.00.

Already the Branch Committee at Mt Pleasant Post Office has taken 65 copies for all their committee members and shop stewards. They are faced with massive job losses at the site and are keen to extend their knowledge of organising at work and taking strike action to win.

Could Steve Hedley have kept his job (with GTRM)?

The strike by railway workers in August 1998 was defeated and Steve Hedley, shop steward at Euston station lost his job. Could the outcome have been different? Certainly, if it had of been then it would have represented a tremendous victory for rail workers and a massive dent in the rail companies scramble for profits; which is leading to major safety disasters and a declining public service.Make your own minds up as some of the main players in the struggle, including Steve Hedley, put their own points of view on what happened. £1 a copy, post free, 50 pence for 10 or more copies

'Rank & File or Bureaucracy - a short history of the Building Worker Group' Written by Brian Higgins

This is an inspiring account of self-organisation among building workers which outlines the opposition the Building Worker Group has had to face from the bosses, the bureaucracy of the unions, and a left obsessed with voting in progressive union officials and Labour Governments. If you read anything on workers' struggles you should read this. This booklet will undoubtedly cause outrage amongst the UCATT officials who have constantly tried to silence the Building Worker Group for over 25 years, including taking out an ultimately unsuccessful High Court Writ against the Secretary of the group in 1996. What have the officials got to hide? Read the booklet and find out. A classic. £2 a copy plus 50 pence postage or £20 for 10 copies post free.
